Essie McKoy sips nonalcoholic champagne as she watches the Royal Wedding with other "brides" at Vows in Watertown.

They came by the dozens, delicately sipping English tea and nibbling scones and strawberries. Some clutched champagne flutes filled with orange juice. The bagels remained untouched; no one wanted to negotiate cream cheese while wearing thousands of dollars of borrowed couture.

The Royal Wedding was celebrated in style by brides - young, old, and yet to be - at a special breakfast held at Vows Bridal Outlet in Watertown on Friday morning. Though the menu was simple beach wedding dresses beach wedding dresses, the dress code was a little more formal - wedding dresses for everyone.

"I love it," said Essie McKoy, who came with her friend Jean DeAngelo from the Casselman House in Newton Centre. "I'm wearing a great dress , and everyone here looks so fabulous."

McKoy and DeAngelo have seen a few royal weddings in their time, but they said this one stacks up well.

DeAngelo and McKoy were the oldest 'brides' at the event, and came because DeAngelo's son is Rick DeAngelo, who owns Vows Bridal Outlet with his wife, Leslie. "I think it was gorgeous, but maybe a little bigger than I would have wanted," said Avery Belle, a bride-to-be whose fiance recently proposed. "I think I will have a more understated wedding at my family's home in Connecticut. No trumpeters."

"I already have my dress, but I wanted to watch to get ideas about flowers and things," said Amelia Santini, who's getting married in just over two months. "I think everything was wonderful."

Santini does like a little fanfare with her ceremony, cinderella wedding dresses but she plans on borrowing it, not buying.

"I am getting married at the Hyatt Harborside the day before the Fourth of July," Santini said. "I wanted fireworks, but I can't afford them, so I'm letting the city pay for them."

Not everyone at the event was planning a wedding. Some were commemorating cherished memories of weddings past. Take mother-daughter duo Molly Greist and Anna Rossi, both of whom came in the dresses they were married in.

"I got the inspiration for my dress when I was living in London, actually," Greist said. "I was married in 1973, and I saw a dress in a store in London I loved. When I got back to America I sewed a copy of the dress myself. I'm glad I was able to get it zipped today!"

Rossi, Greist's daughter, found out about the event because she bought her veil and jewelry for her Washington State wedding in 2009 at Vows.

In the end, like the royal wedding, Vows' breakfast went off without a hitch.

"If I could have changed anything, I would have had dancing!" Leslie DeAngelo said. "With so many brides, you want dancing."
